Hearing and Chronic Ear Disorders
Anatomy of the Ear

The ear is broken down into three main areas: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear includes the part we can see (the pinna) and the ear canal. The middle ear includes the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and the three bones of the middle ear (ossicles), which are positioned in an air-filled cavity. Also in the middle ear space lays the opening to the Eustachian tube . The inner ear includes the hearing organ (cochlea) and balance portions of the ear (semicircular canals). Problems or damage to any of these areas can result in hearing loss, either temporary or permanent.
